Questions & answers
The questions homeowners actually ask.
The questions homeowners actually ask us, in the order they tend to ask them — from “is this a job for you?” through to “what happens on site while you’re here?”
Stage
Before you decide
What kind of work do you take on?
We’re a general builder: new builds, single and double-storey extensions, garage conversions, patios, driveways, brickwork and repointing, groundwork and drainage, roofing, doors and windows, plastering and rendering, decorating, power cleaning and more — across Saffron Walden, Cambridge and the Uttlesford district. Because we manage the whole build and coordinate our trusted electrical and plumbing trades, you deal with one team from groundwork to sign-off.
Who will actually be running the job?
James Bruno — known to most customers as James or Jamie — runs every job and does the work, with a settled team alongside him. Reviewers name Rob and Paul among the crew. For the electrics we coordinate Al Platten Electrics, and for plumbing and heating, Warmtouch — the trades our reviews name.
We want to do some of the work ourselves to save money — is that a problem?
Not at all. One customer wanted a “build-only finish” and to take on parts themselves, and James was “happy to work with us on this basis and flexible enough to make this happen within our budget and timescales” — with the team taking time to explain the best way to tackle the jobs they’d chosen to do. We’ll guide and support you rather than leave you to it.

Design & building control
Do you handle the structural work and building control?
Yes. We build to the structural engineer’s design, coordinate with your architect where there is one, and liaise with Uttlesford building control ourselves — so, as our reviews put it, projects are “fully signed off by building control” and you don’t need to worry about the paperwork.
Do you charge for a visit or a quote?
No. James will come out, look at the job properly and talk it through — including honest, practical advice on what the project needs — and there’s no charge for that conversation or the quote that follows.
Stage
During the build
How much mess and disruption should we expect?
We keep the site clean and tidy throughout — “kept the site clean and tidy,” as one review says — and we’re mindful of your neighbours with parking and deliveries, something neighbours regularly comment on. A build is never invisible, but it needn’t take over the house or the street.
What if we need to change something mid-way?
We’re used to it. One customer noted that “even though we made a few changes along the way, the project still came in on budget,” with the team finding “practical and creative solutions rather than letting things turn into a problem.” We’ll talk through what a change means for the work and the cost before doing it.
Stage
Areas & availability
Which areas do you cover?
Saffron Walden and the wider Uttlesford district — Newport, Thaxted, Great Chesterford, Stansted Mountfitchet, Great Dunmow and the surrounding villages — plus Cambridge and its southern villages such as Linton and Sawston. For larger projects we’re happy to travel a little further; if you’re nearby, just ask.
Can we book you for more than one stage?
Yes — plenty of customers do. After a garage conversion or an extension, several have had us straight back for a patio or garden landscaping. One review notes: “we were so impressed that they’re now completing our patio and garden landscaping.” It’s usually worth talking through a phased plan up front.
Still have a question?
Ask James directly — there's no charge for a chat or a quote.
